Friday September 30th was a fun day for Owensboro. For the first time in 3 months the Owensboro Bridge was open to traffic. For the first time in more than a half century it was open to foot traffic. Keith Todd with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has hoped several hundred people would show for the walk/bike/run/skate before you drive experience. He was wrong, very wrong.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is joining with the City of Owensboro and Daviess County Government to declare Friday, September 30th as “Bridge Day” on the KY 2262 Ohio River Bridge. A contractor will finish a deck rehab project Owensboro’s Blue Bridge about 4 days early, allowing the bridge to be available to pedestrians before reopening to automobile traffic Friday night.

The KY 2155 Ohio River Bridge – known locally as the “Blue Bridge” and the Glover Cary Bridge in downtown Owensboro – is closed for a deck rehabilitation project.  When it reopens, the bridge will have a new route designation.  It will become the KY 2262 Ohio River Bridge.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has set a target date for closure of Owensboro’s Blue Bridge.  A contractor plans to close the bridge at 6:00 a.m. on July 5, 2011, to allow reconstruction of a major portion of the bridge deck. According to KYTC District 2 Chief Engineer Kevin McClearn, highway engineers and the contractor worked through routine scheduling issues to come up with the July
