Alright, coffee drinkers don't freak out yet!  There is a possibility your coffee does have cockroaches or other bugs in it but you will never see them.  Here's why.

IT'S APPARENTLY SOMETHING A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW

I actually found this horrible fact out a few years ago as I was sipping on my morning cup of Joe.  One of the few things I truly enjoy in life that my children don't try and take out of my hands is my coffee and BAM now I can't even enjoy that.

When I asked around a lot of people weren't surprised by it in the least bit.  I told my morning show co-host Chad and his exact words were "I'm not surprised" I guess this is why he doesn't drink coffee.  According to the FDA, it is totally normal.

WHY DO THEY GET IN OUR COFFEE?

Cockroaches don't necessarily like coffee they like ground-up green coffee beans.  These beans give them the energy they need to function.  Sound familiar?!  Many bugs end up in coffee because they are harvested when the farmers come along and do their work.

Here's the other crazy side of the coin-Coffee can actually kill roaches.  The beans aren't lethal but if used right they can kill them.  It's a DIY method for your home.  I read multiple insect control websites where they tell you to take the coffee grounds and place them in a jar or cup with water and the roaches will crawl inside trying to smell the aroma and they will drown.   Another contradictory way to use coffee to get rid of roaches is to sprinkle the grounds on the outside of your home.   Apparently, the grounds repel the roaches from entering.

CAN BUGS IN OUR COFFEE OR FOOD HURT US?

The amount of bugs that make their way into our foods is less than 10%.  According to coffeeness.com;

It also seems to be a part of our culture to be more creeped out about consuming bugs. Indeed, some other cultures eat bugs as part of their regular diet. I don’t know about the cockroach, but critters like mealworms and crickets are actually a good source of fiber. Plus, chocolate-covered ants are a tasty treat!

The full answer to are there roaches in your coffee-YES.  You have probably enjoyed a roach or two while sipping your morning cup.  The good news is if you're reading this article you survived.
