A Bald Picture Is Worth $5000 for American Heart

You may remember the story yesterday about Audubon Elementary School's fundraising campaign to support the American Heart Association (Jump Rope for Heart). Each year, AES offers some type of incentive for the kids to raise money. It's amazsing what the right incentive can do.

This year, kids received extra outdoor PE time for bringing in any amount. Additionally, the principal and assistant principal, Caleb York and Mitchell Jones, agreed to run one mile for every $100 raised, and PE teacher/Jump Rope for Heart coordinator Stephen Julian promised to be duct taped to the wall if the kids could raise $2,500.

The kids met that challenge rather quickly, so Mr. York and Mr. Jones were already looking forward to doing a lot of running, and Mr. Julian was ready to be taped to the wall.

But then one student asked, “What if we raise $5,000 – what will you do?” Mr. Julian said he didn’t think the kids could raise that much, but the student insisted. Mr. Julian finally said that if the students of Audubon Elementary School raised $5,000 for the American Heart Association, he would SHAVE HIS HEAD. Then music teacher Rick Case chimed in that he would shave his head too.

It was a “close shave” … but the kids came through, and on the last day of the campaign (Friday, March 23), the final pennies were counted and the goal of $5,000 was MET!
