Deer Park Elementary to Help Henryville Elementary After Tornadoes

Deer Park Elementary School students are reaching out to help students at Henryville Elementary School, one of several schools in the West Clark (Ind.) school district that were destroyed by tornadoes on March 2.

 Amy Foreman, a primary teacher at DPES, contacted Sara Reschar, administrative assistant for West Clark Community Schools, to see how the Daviess County children could help. They have made arrangements for school supplies to be delivered to Henryville as the community works to rebuild from the disaster.

Among items being collected are spiral notebooks, loose-leaf notebook paper, crayons, folders, pencils, glue and glue sticks, binders, rulers, children’s scissors and erasers. Children are also asked to donate paperback children’s books, which will be donated to Henryville teachers as they begin to restock their classroom libraries.

Foreman said DPES students felt great empathy for the children of Henryville. “We came back to school on Monday as usual,” she said. “The students in Henryville had no school to come back to on Monday.”

 The outreach is part of the school’s overall vision of developing good citizenship among its students. “At Deer Park, we believe it is very important for students to develop the characteristics of empathy and caring,” Foreman said. “As an International Baccalaureate World School, we want our children to positively affect and change the world around them. What better way to accomplish this goal than to help those so affected by the tornados last week? This is a small way we can help those the same age.”
