How Daviess County Schools Will Celebrate The First Day of School

It's hard to believe, but the summer break is over.  And Daviess County Public Schools, like a lot of school systems in the WBKR listening area, return to the class this Wednesday.  But schools in the district are making every attempt to make sure students aren't dreading the big day.  Here's a list of how local schools are planning to ring in the new school year!

Apollo High School 

AHS has adopted a theme of “Eagle Pride” for 2016-17 and will start the new year with a conversation about expectations, taking ownership for actions and demonstrating pride in the school and in everything we do, including academics, sports, music, dance and clubs. New principal Rick Lasley will challenge the students and staff to “leave places better than you found it; with everything you are involved in, do it well and to the best of your ability.” Lasley will also challenge students and staff to adopt an area on the AHS campus and work to beautify the area by keeping it clean and helping with landscaping etc.

 Burns Elementary School 

BES has adopted the TEAM theme this year. The faculty and staff will be outside the school, in the front parking lot, side parking lot and on the front porch, cheering on our Bobcats as they arrive at school (starting at approximately 7:20 a.m.). Staff members will be waving pom-poms and holding balloons and “Welcome Back!” posters as they greet arriving students.

Country Heights Elementary School 

CHES will have a balloon release at 1:15 p.m. on the first day of school as all students and staff members will record their hopes, dreams and goals for the upcoming school year and attach notes to balloons.

Daviess County Middle School 

The theme this year is “The Power of Yet!” as the DCMS family celebrates the first day of school and all the potential of a new year! Media specialist Katie Albers said, “No more saying ‘I can’t do it.’ It’s time to proclaim, ‘I just haven’t done it YET!’ This year, school leaders are using leadership habits to help students be forward thinking, growth minded and positive about the possibilities of each day. To celebrate, on the first day of school, teachers will line the driveway by 7:30 a.m., cheering as the buses and cars arrive.

Deer Park Elementary School

DPES teachers will line the driveway to welcome and cheer students as they arrive starting at 7 a.m.

East View Elementary School

The EVES theme this year is “It Takes a BIG Heart to Shape Growing Minds!” Students will be greeted with lots of love and encouragement as they arrive at EVES on the first day of school. Starting at 6:30 a.m., teachers will line the bus loading zone and along the drive to cheer students as they arrive and prepare for the first day of school.

Heritage Park High School 

HPHS staff members will welcome students with a red carpet as they arrive from 7:40 to 8:10 a.m. Wednesday. The school will enjoy a popsicle break at 1:30 p.m. to help Phoenix students cool down after the first day’s excitement of new opportunities and initiatives.

Sorgho Elementary School 

SES will kick off a great school year with an exciting service project to go with the school theme, “The Greatest Show of Leading and Learning on Earth!” The Sorgho Café Crew is sponsoring a luncheon for staff from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, serving a fried chicken dinner with all the trimmings. The café crew is asking the staff for donations for Shriners Hospital, which helps children with special medical needs (http://www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org/). The Sorgho PTO has also approved a donation to this great cause. By collecting these donations, Sorgho students will have the privilege of being visited by Shriners clowns the first day of school, Wednesday, Aug. 10. The schedule for the Shriners clown visit is as follows:

·       7:30-8:10 a.m. – Shriner clowns will walk halls and wave in classrooms, greeting parents and students

·       8:10-8:45 a.m. – Clowns will attend a schoolwide meeting with class photos as the SES team kicks off a new school year by introducing the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, ld by “Ringmaster” (principal) Laura Cecil

·       8:45-9:30 a.m. – Clowns will talk with P1 students in art and science rooms and make lots of smiles for the first day of school

Tamarack Elementary School

TES staff will welcome students back to a school that has undergone major renovation this summer. Construction in some areas is still underway. First-year principal Carrie Munsey and her staff will be on duty starting at 6:45 a.m. to direct traffic and welcome Tamarack Stars back for another year of learning.

West Louisville Elementary School 

WLES students will enter their school on the “red carpet” and will be greeted by the school mascot Paws from 7 to 7:30 a.m. on the first day of school.

Whitesville Elementary School 

WES has adopted the district theme of “Growing Minds, Growing Hearts” and will begin the new year with a school-wide assembly at 9 a.m. to talk about nurturing a growth mindset. The school will release some growing vines in the gym at the end. And, WES Family Resource Center coordinator Anne Woolwine will perform a song about “the Power of Yet.”  Students will be greeted with a red carpet at the front door when they arrive at school on the first day of classes.
