Jennifer Humphrey has been named principal of Southern Oaks Elementary School following a unanimous vote of the SOES Site-Based Decision Making Council on April 18.

Humphrey, who has served as assistant principal at College View Middle School since 2010, will begin her responsibilities on July 1. She replaces Pam Burns, who is retiring at the conclusion of the 2011-12 school year.

Humphrey said her greatest strengths lie in the areas of building positive relationships and developing the potential in others. “I look for ways to challenge people by devising interesting experiences that can stretch them and help them grow,” she said.

Her professional career began in 1993, when she taught at Sorgho Elementary School. She joined the staff of Utica Elementary School in 1996, and was named staff developer at UES in 2005. Utica closed in 2008 and she continued her service as staff developer at Southern Oaks Elementary School until 2010, when she joined CVMS.

Humphrey earned a bachelor of science degree from the University of Kentucky in 1993 and a master of arts in elementary education from Western Kentucky University in 1996. She earned her Rank I from WKU in 2000. Other certifications include a professional certificate for instructional leadership/supervisor of instruction, level 2; and certificate for instructional leadership/principal, all grades, level 1.

DCPS Interim Superintendent Mike Gray said, “Jennifer’s background in the classroom and her work in staff development and administration will contribute to her success in leadership at Southern Oaks. We are confident she will continue the tradition of academic success that have defined Southern Oaks.”
