John Calipari Commits Secondary NCAA Violation
If you love to talk, like University of Kentucky head basketball coach John Calipari likes to talk, and there's a rule on the NCAA books that can be violated by merely talking, it wouldn't be a bad idea to measure your words and think before you speak.
According to a Yahoo! report, during a press conference at the SEC spring meetings in Destin, Florida, Calipari was asked about incoming UK freshman Ashton Hagans, a five-star point guard.
Over the course of the answer he gave when asked if he thought Hagans would've come to Kentucky had Mark Fox not been fired at Georgia--the first school to heavily pursue the blue chip recruit--Calipari eventually got around to uttering the phrase, "...and we get a terrific player."
And that is a no-no.
While Hagans is coming to play for the Wildcats, he has not officially signed a national letter of intent.
That means that Calipari cannot talk about him as if he already has.
It is a secondary violation, but it's a violation nonetheless.
And according to SEC Country, it's one that will likely yield a scolding from the appropriate party or parties and require a self-report by the University of Kentucky.
It's not close to a violation along the lines of one that would lead to a post-season ban, the coach sitting out games, or the recruit having to go elsewhere.
But I'm sure there will be a few folks who will remind Calipari to be more careful in the future when speaking about recruits.
Hagans will be a great addition to a 2018-19 Wildcats roster that is shaping up to be something special.
But let's hold off on the talk until he signs on the dotted line, first.
