OWENSBORO! DAVIESS COUNTY!  Have you heard?!  For the conscientious recycler like me, I have joyous news!  Curbside recycling is available to us.  Not just for the city folk, for those in the county too, which is where I fit in.

As an inveterate recycler, this is truly exciting news! For years I have been saving, sorting, bagging and hauling those recyclables which held a position in the so-labeled bins at the manual recycle drop on 7th Street which the city had created for us.  Not an easy task now, mind you…  I live in the county where each trek in to town costs time and gas, so every trip counts.  This means combining my errands.  Recycle Day was always a dread for me because it was an addition to my chore list which meant gathering my countless bulky bags and bins of sorted plastics, steel cans, aluminum cans, paper and cardboard, the physical labor of cramming them in the rear of my little car and navigating my way through the one-way streets to the point of drop. Weather be darned; if it was on my chore list, it had to be done, particularly if I had waited too long between trips and I was at my saturation point.

But no more; those days are over for me now!  Through a Seize the Deal offer, I’ve signed up with GO! Recycling.  They gave me a bin and sorting is not required. I rinse and toss the same items I’ve been saving for years and they pick it up.  But it doesn’t stop there.  Gone is my old metal wheelbarrow and leftover car parts requiring disposal.  I simply set it out with my bin for Monday’s pick up and like magic, it’s gone!  I’m thinking this will make spring clean up will be a breeze. Their list of items accepted reads as follows:   newspaper, magazines, office paper, junk mail, notebook paper, shredded paper that is bagged up, cardboard, all numbered plastics, aluminum cans and foil, steel cans, all other metals such as old wires, pots, pans, old lawnmowers, equipment, tools, etc., all batteries, all electronics such as hair dryers, computers, cell and home phones, etc., and glass containers.  Heck, other than leftover food items, what DON’T they accept?

Folks, this is big – a leap forward and a tremendous opportunity for our community to lend our support to a vital and much needed service.  For years, I complained to my daughter about the fact that Evansville had curbside recycle service but Owensboro just wouldn’t go green. Now, we can show the outside world we are indeed conscious-minded and in step with the concept of sustainable living and ecological preservation.

At the risk of sounding like I am writing an advertorial, the curbside recycle assistance is a huge step forward in making Owensboro’s footprint a little greener. Whether you choose to take you recyclables to Resource Recycling, 7th Street or have Go! Recycling pick it up curbside, it’s our responsibility to reduce, reuse and recycle our trash. Did I mention this service is available for businesses too?  Get on board, people – go green!   For more information, contact GO!
