Every family has great holiday stories. Mine is no exception. And it seems like our BEST holiday stories are about Thanksgiving.

It's funny. It reminds me of sitcoms from the 90s and 2000s that were really good at delivering either Christmas episodes or Halloween episodes or Valentine's Day episodes.

We were good at "Thanksgiving episodes."

I've spent Thanksgiving Day in end zone seats at Texas Stadium watching the Dallas Cowboys take on (and beat) the New England Patriots. That was 1984 when that could happen.

We've had Thanksgiving dinners where we had to haul everything, including the dinner table, into the living room because the kitchen sink backed up, forcing us to call a plumber.

And then there was 1995 which, I think, was my favorite. It was the last Thanksgiving my parents hosted at the old house and my aunt and uncle were visiting from New Mexico. And they did not come alone.

They brought their pets--a small, yet adult, pig called a javalina and a three-legged Yorkshire terrier. The dog had been born with only three legs and, being an animal, had fully adapted to its predicament.

So there they were, running around the backyard. I have no idea what the look on my face was, but my dad cracked up when he saw me see the pig for the first time. By the way, the pig and the dog got along great.

But, wait! There's more.

Mom and Dad had an apartment attached to the back of their house where my grandfather lived until he died. So that kitchen and the main kitchen were in full use. But do you know where the turkey was prepared?

Yep, you guessed it (but, seriously, did you REALLY guess it?)--in an electric roasting pan on the washing machine. Where else?

Too bad we were out of fabric softener that day. The bird was a little dry.

The turkey was a bit dry that year. Maybe we should have added a little fabric softener.

I hope you're having a lot of laughs today.

Happy Thanksgiving everybody!
