Sgt. William Eugene Brashear left Owensboro 62 years ago to serve in the Korean War. Today his remains returned home to Daviess County for burial tomorrow.

The story of Sgt. Brashear is one of more than 7900 who are unaccounted for.

Gene Brashear was born in Owensboro on Feb. 8, 1926 and attended Daviess County High.

He was the fifth Daviess Countian killed in the war and  was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Brashear returned home with honor as the Owensboro Police Department, members of the United States Military and more than 30 Rolling Thunder Motorcycles from Indiana and Kentucky led the caravan. Upon arriving at the National Guard Armory more than 300 attendies of the Vietman Veterans Welcome Home Day joined in lining the walkway from the parking lot thru the front door of the Armory.

It was an impressive sight to see veterans join together to honor one of their own. I felt a warm sense of pride as I stood shoulder to shoulder with those men and women.

I am posting some photos so you may share in that feeling of patriotic pride.
