DPES students to tag butterflies

Fourth-grade students at Deer Park Elementary School will walk across the road to the campus of Owensboro Community and Technical College today at 11 a.m. where they will net and tag Monarch butterflies.

The students will be working on this project with OCTC biology professor Micah Perkins and representatives from Audubon State Park.

If successful in catching and tagging the butterflies, the students will then attempt to track their migrant to Mexico through the Monarch Watch website, www.monarchwatch.org, which is dedicated to education, conservation and research, with an emphasis on the preservation of habitats that sustain the butterflies along their migratory pathways.

Southern Oaks sponsors ‘Club Days’

Southern Oaks Elementary School is sponsoring a monthly “Club Day,” special days designated to ensure that all students are given the opportunity to make connections and participate with other students who share interests and skills. Teachers, staff members and community volunteers support the students by serving as sponsors and mentors.

DPES students experience arts, downtown

First-grade students from Deer Park Elementary School will take a field trip to downtown Owensboro today. The experience is designed to introduce children to the many artistic and educational venues available in our hometown. Our media partners are invited to join the fun!

Students will be divided into three groups, which will rotate among these sessions/locations from 9 to 11 a.m. and again from 12:15 to 1 p.m.

·         Studio Slant, where kids will do some hands-on painting

·         Musick Studio, where kids will learn a dance

·         Owensboro Area Museum of Science and History, where kids will view educational displays and enjoy the interactive exhibits

Everyone will gather for lunch from 11 a.m. to noon at Smothers Park, where the children will have an opportunity to enjoy the new playground area.

The day will conclude with everyone meeting at Capone’s at 1 p.m., where they will sample food snacks before returning to school.

“This trip was planned with the intention of exposing our students to the arts and all the wonderful venues our downtown has to offer,” said Heidi Dees, DPES primary teacher. “It’s important for our kids to be aware of the many opportunities available right here in their hometown, and to be able to experience firsthand how these venues add to the quality of life for residents of Daviess County.”

DCMS to host ‘JA in a Day’ event

Daviess County Middle School is hosting “JA in a Day” from 8:35 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Thursday at the school, located at 1415 E. Fourth St. The Junior Achievement program is designed to provide students with valuable “Economics for Success” lessons in a variety of areas.

JA volunteers representing several local organizations will facilitate the lessons. Volunteers, their organizations and topics are as follows:

·         Career Exploration and the College Experience – Chris Houk, Brescia University; Kurt Hoffman, Owensboro Christian Church

·         Keeping Your Balance – Tommy Rowland, State Farm Insurance; Beth Castlen, Southern Star Central Gas Pipeline (SSCGP)

·         Savvy Shopper: Pros and Cons of Using Credit – Don Kelley, retired businessman; Will Wathen, SSCGP

·         Keeping Score – Kristi Johnson, U.S. Bank; Melissa Sullivan, South Central Bank

·         What’s the Risk – Fred May, U.S. Bank; Zachary Parsons, SSCGP

The program is organized by Anke Patterson, program coordinator for Junior Achievement of West Kentucky. Patterson said students are very excited about the program. “The JA Economics for Success program explores personal finance and students’ education and career options based on their skills, interests, and values,” she said. “This program uses hands-on classroom activities that really drive the program content home for the students.”

Amy Claycomb, DCMS Youth Services Center coordinator, said the Economics for Success program is an excellent opportunity to correlate and meet criteria for both the Youth Service Center’s Grant Component of Career Exploration and Development and the KDE Program Review Component of Practical Living/Career Studies. “We are so fortunate to have Junior Achievement and its countless number of volunteers in our community,” she said. “Students will learn about personal finance and the benefits of higher education based on each student’s skills, interests and values, which are important life-skills for our students to understand.”

Nancy Lucas, Practical Living and Career Studies (PLCS) teacher at DCMS, added that JA in a Day will touch on math and reading skills, consumerism, real-world problem solving, and college and career readiness, all essential components of the PLCS curriculum and the middle school core content in general.

Southern Oaks to host ‘Harvest Day’ activities

Southern Oaks Elementary School is hosting its annual Harvest Day Celebration on Friday, Oct. 5. Activities are scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the school, located at 7525 U.S. Highway 431, Utica (south of Owensboro).

Children will also enjoy tractor rides and participate in hands-on demonstrations such as corn shelling, woodworking and butter churning. A display of honeybees is planned, and children will also participate in a variety of games and activities.

A delicious menu of bean soup and cornbread will be served.

The event will take place rain or shine. The media is cordially invited to attend.

CVMS to host cheer and dance clinic

College View Middle School is hosting a cheer and dance clinic from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at the school, located at 5061 New Hartford Road.

The clinic is open to DCPS students in kindergarten through sixth grade. No previous experience is required. Registration fee is $30 and includes a snack. T-shirts will be given to children whose registration forms are received by Oct. 24.

Participants will perform at the CVMS basketball game on Nov. 15.

Registration will also be accepted at the door but only if there is space available in the child’s age group.
