DCHS Drama Team to present ‘Orphan Trains’ Monday

The Daviess County High School drama team will present the one-act play “Orphan Trains” by Deborah Craig at 7 p.m. Monday.

This 45-minute drama focuses on a part of American history that is unfamiliar to many people. From 1853 to 1929, The Orphan Trains Project and The Children’s Aid Society of New York worked to reduce the overcrowding of orphanages by joining orphaned or abandoned children, many from immigrant families, to farm families across America’s mid-section. The script is based on primary records of the Children’s Aid Society. “Orphan Trains” brings this compelling story of hardships and victories to life, resonating with the authentic voices of a diverse group of children. General admission is $5. Tickets may be purchased at the door.

Director Karen Feldhaus added, “At the request of our students, we have added a community service project to our performance. A portion of the admissions taken will be donated to All Blessings International to aid in their humanitarian efforts.”

Each year, the most talented performers from high schools across Kentucky compete in various state contests. This year, students from Daviess County High School will perform “Orphan Trains” at the Kentucky Theater Association’s State One-Act Play Contest on Nov. 2-3 in Lexington. Four judges will select Best Show and All-Star Cast honorees. Productions finishing in first and second place will advance to represent the state of Kentucky at the South Eastern Theater Conference in March.
