The Daviess County Public Schools district was recognized for excellence in public relations during an awards ceremony hosted by the Kentucky School Public Relations Association in Louisville on July 19.

A total of eight OASIS Awards – Outstanding Achievement in School Information Services – were presented to two members of the DCPS team.

Linda Salyer was awarded first place in the video category of “In-School Programs or Training” for a video spotlighting the district’s “Focusing Our Vision” initiative on preparing students to succeed for life.

Lora Wimsatt, DCPS public relations coordinator, won first-place awards in the press release category for a release promoting the district’s “Camp Curiosity” for migrant students; and in the feature photography category for a photograph titled “Making the Connection,” depicting interim superintendent Mike Gray with a student at West Louisville Elementary School.

Wimsatt also won five second-place awards, including one for a news release about the “Our Special Friends” program at Country Heights Elementary School and a feature photograph titled “The Big Picture” showing Southern Oaks Elementary School teacher Patrick Riley working with a student. Other second-place awards were in the categories of electronic newsletter for the staff newsletter “Grapevine”; external publications for “Facts About DCPS”; and calendar for the district’s 2012-13 instructional calendar.

Owens Saylor, DCPS Superintendent, said he is proud of the variety of categories in which the district’s public relations work earned honors. “The DCPS district is committed to communicating information to our students, parents, staff and community,” he said. “We believe in the importance of keeping everyone informed about what’s going on in Daviess County Public Schools. These awards are meaningful because they represent success toward that goal.”
