Did You Know Legion Park Use To Have A Live Monkey Cage? (Photo)
When I worked for the Owensboro Parks & Recreation Department I learned quite a lot about the local city parks. I was surprised to find out Legion Park used to house animals!Legion was originally called Hickman Park, after James Hardin Hickman, until he encouraged the city commissioners to honor Owensboro men who had fought in World War I. After his suggestion, the park was eventually named the American Legion Park.
Just as you see now the park was home to many large trees, lots of green space, and a walk way surrounding the park, it also had a monkey house which housed two monkeys and other animals from white rabbits, foxes, coons, and a variety of birds.
Also located on the park space were two fishing ponds, a bandstand, and a concession stand.
Now the park offers incredible amenities such as a Spraypark, two shelters (used for family reunions, birthday parties, and more), and a beautiful 1/2 mile walking track.
Legion Park is located at 3047 Legion Park Drive.
