Burns, Highland, Sorgho, Southern Oaks, Tamarack and West Louisville elementary schools have earned outstanding reputations for their exemplary early childhood programs. In addition, Sorgho, Southern Oaks and Tamarack have earned accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children. The school is one of the very few preschools in Owensboro/Daviess County to undergo this rigorous process and earn the NAEYC certificate. (Audubon and Whitesville elementary schools have also received NAEYC certification but do not have tuition-based preschool. Country Heights, Deer Park, East View, Meadow Lands elementary schools also have state-funded preschool but do not offer a tuition-based preschool program.)

The preschool programs at all DCPS schools give our youngest students a wonderful “first step” along the pathway of education.  Through state-funded KERA preschool, preschool programs are able to serve 3-and 4-year-old children who are income eligible or who have a learning delay or disability.

Half-day preschool operates from approximately 8 to 11 a.m. and from 11:10 a.m. to 2:10 p.m. Monday through Thursday each week. The cost for fee-based preschool is $175 monthly.  A $50 non-refundable deposit is required to secure placement.

Among the services provided, these preschool students would:

  • Receive instruction from a certified teacher trained in early childhood education
  • Learn basic skills to prepare for kindergarten through a literacy and math readiness curriculum that is age appropriate
  • Participate in all school activities, such as music, library, assemblies, etc.
  • Eat lunch daily (cost is $1.75 a day)
  • Bus transportation is available to those living in the school district

Parents who are interested in learning more are invited to visit any DCPS preschool or contact the DCPS Central Office at (270) 852-7000 or contact@dcps.org
