Still trying to fill a few summertime staycation holes before the kids go back to school? Well, why not try a free nature cruise?

This sounds like a blast. And if it had been around when I was a kid, my family would have been all over it.

It's Kentucky State University's Kentucky Thorobred and it's described as a "classroom on the water."

The boat tours are free and they are educational. And, naturally, they are a lot of fun.

Now, while the cruises are free, they do require reservations.

It only makes sense that an opportunity like this would be seized by many.

The Thorobred is part of KSU's Land Grant program and is a working research and educational vessel.

Passengers will learn all about the water on which they are traveling, as well as the natural resources they will be viewing as they cruise down the Kentucky River.

There's never a better way to educate than to also make it fun.

If you're interested in taking a free cruise--and KSU is already adding dates due to demand--visit the Kentucky Thorobred's Facebook page and follow the links.

Have fun!
