It's been a long road, or short road, depending on who you ask as to when the Kentucky high school football season started. One thing is for sure, the Owensboro High School Red Devils are in the KHSAA Class 5A championship game this afternoon at Kroger Field in Lexington. They put their 12-0 season on the line against long-time rivals the Bowling Green High School Purples.

This will mark the eighth time the Red Devils have appeared in the state title game. They've won at state four times (1917, 1974, 1983, 1986). Their last appearance in the title game was in 2014 when they were defeated by Highlands 49-42. Owensboro's road to the championship game included one hiccup when Louisville Fairdale had to forfeit to the Red Devils due to COVID-19. The semi-final match-up with Fredrick Douglass last Friday night came down to a field goal which the Broncos missed to give Owensboro the 28-27 victory.

Bowling Green leads Owensboro just 40-39-2 in overall match-ups. The Purples won state titles from 2011 to 2016 and they won 14 straight against the Red Devils until 2018 when Owensboro bested Bowling Green in the playoffs in the second round.

The schools are about 70 miles apart on I-165, the former Natcher Parkway. The game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. central time and it can be seen HERE.
