The Daviess County Public Schools district is hosting an intensive technology camp for teachers from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Today through Thursday, July 23-26, at the DCPS Learning Center, 1700 Parrish Plaza Drive. This summer marks the fourth consecutive year for the Summer Technology Immersion Program.

Thirty-six DCPS high school teachers have taken part in this program over the past three years. The 2012 class includes 11 high school teachers and 32 elementary and middle school teachers. High school teachers were selected as part of an application process while elementary/middle teachers were recommended by their school principals.

The camp is designed to allow teachers time to study and practice emerging technology tools, techniques and strategies that have been identified as especially helpful in managing and enhancing the teaching and learning process. Teachers will also study the newest general and content-specific “apps” designed to support advanced levels of student learning on cutting-edge devices, including the iPad.

Anthony Sparks, DCPS director of instructional technology, said, “Ultimately, students will benefit from this program as teachers implement various instructional, assessment and curriculum tools throughout the school year. Specifically, students will acquire new ways to conduct research, become better organized and assess their own levels of learning.”

The high school trainer is Elizabeth Helfant, senior consultant with Educational Collaborators and director of technology for Mary Institute and Saint Louis Country Day School. Connie White, senior collaborator at Educational Collaborators and director of technology and learning at Lakeview Academy in Georgia, will train elementary and middle school teachers.
