State Board of Education Approves Graduation Requirement Changes
No Alegbra II? It's happening as the Kentucky Department of Education Board voted to approve the changes to high school graduation requirements.
The measure passed unanimously. Newly named Commissioner Wayne Lewis said the proposal would "ensure basic skills in reading, math, and transition readiness" after a student graduates, regardless if he or she continues on with a post-secondary education.
The changes include students forgoing Algebra II in favor of selecting courses that would best suit their career path, and sophomores would take a standardized math and reading test with more opportunities to retake it in later school years if they fail.
There will now be a 30 day window for revisions based on feedback from the public.
